Marshall finished the season with a 41-20 loss to the ACC’s Virginia Tech. However, within conference play, the Thundering Herd started with a win over Western Kentucky and then followed that with a loss to Middle Tennessee. The Blue Raiders would take the East Division with Marshall finishing second. After that loss, the Thundering Herd went 5-1 in C-USA play. The Bulls started AAC play at 2-0. But after that, it was downhill, as they lost their five remaining conference games. That included their final three to the trio of teams that finished above them in the AAC East. With that in mind, here’s our 2018 Gasparilla Bowl preview that includes free picks for the spread and totals.

South Florida Bulls – Analysis
On the ground, he carried the ball 99 times, averaging 3.2 YPA and scoring 8 times. If he does not play, the duties may be split between junior Chris Oladokun and sophomore Brett Kean. Both completed under 50% of their pass attempts. Although the Bulls are primarily a running team, they will still utilize the pass. Look for wideout Tyre McCants (58 REC, 607 YDs, 3 TDs) to be the top pass catcher. The ground game will be anchored by Jordan Cronkite, who ran for 1,095 yards and 9 TDs while averaging 6.3 YPA. Freshman Johnny Ford, who’s averaged 7.1 YPA, has scored eight times.
The South Florida defense is problematic. They’ve given up 31.5 PPG and 441.9 YPG. Of that yardage, 244.7 is on the ground and 197.3 through the air. Although the Bulls have 84 TFL, they have had a tough time containing the run. They’ve recorded eight FF, 27 sacks, and 11 INTs. Plus, the Bulls have defended 40 passes. Here’s the skinny on this team’s defense versus offense. In their first seven games, which they won, they scored a total of 239 points and allowed 180. In the final five games, all losses, they scored 101 points and gave up 198. They were +5.4 when winning and -19 when losing.

- Marshall QB Green needs to play smart, make good decisions
- Bulls have to find a way to underpin faltering defense
