Appalachian State Mountaineers at Coastal Carolina Chanticleers Betting Pick
The only undefeated teams in conference play get together this weekend when the Appalachian State Mountaineers (6-1, 4-0 Sun Belt) take on No. 15 Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (7-0, 5-0 Sun Belt) in Sun Belt action. The winner of the game will place themselves in the driver’s seat of the East division. Kickoff of the highly anticipated matchup is set for noon Eastern at Brooks Stadium in Conway, S.C. The Chanticleers are a five-point favorite, according to oddsmakers.
What to Know – Appalachian State Mountaineers
The Mountaineers are rolling as winners of their last five contests and only one blemish on their record this season. Last week Appalachian State scored a touchdown late in the fourth quarter to escape with a 17-13 victory over Georgia State.
Senior quarterback Zac Thomas completed 16-of-22 passes for 146 yards, one touchdown, one interception, and added 36 yards rushing. Thomas has accounted for 11 touchdowns over the last four games for the Mountaineers.
Camrun Peoples carried the ball 17 times for 67 yards and a score. The touchdown carry was the go-ahead score with under five minutes to go in the contest that sealed the deal for Appalachian State.
Malik Williams (three catches, 60 yards) and Henry Pearson (three catches, 32 yards, one touchdown) paced the receiving core for the Mountaineers, who had nine players make at least one reception.
The Mountaineers are 1-6 against the spread this season, and the over has gone under in six of their last seven contests.
What to Know – Coastal Carolina Chanticleers
Last season the Chanticleers finished the season with a 5-7 overall record. This year Coastal Carolina enters the final month of play with a perfect 7-0 mark and Top 15 ranking in the nation.
Grayson McCall passed for 209 yards and one touchdown on 17-of-24 passing. McCall added eight rushes for 72 yards, one of three rushers to account for 50 yards or more.
Reese White (nine carries, 81 yards) and Shermari Jones (10 carries, 60 yards, one touchdown), along with McCall, provided a three-headed rushing attack that tallied a total of 236 yards on the ground.
Junior Jaivon Heiligh caught five passes for a game-high 95 yards. Heiligh’s total pushed his season mark to 610 yards receiving, almost 400 more yards than anyone one else on the roster.
Coastal Carolina is 5-1-1 against the spread in 2020, and four of their seven games have seen the total go under.
The Pick is In
This will be an exciting matchup of two teams that are built very similarly. Appalachian State has been the top dog in the Sun Belt for quite some time, but Coastal Carolina has shown it can take down the top teams in the league, with an earlier victory over Louisana-Lafayette earlier this season. Typically, when you have evenly matched teams against each other, it comes down to who can control the ball and not commit any turnovers.
This should be a close one throughout, with either team escaping with a narrow victory. Appalachian State may not win outright, but they should cover the five-point spread
The Pick: Appalachian State +5
