The Course
This week the golf world heads to the Royal Liverpool golf club in England for the British Open. The British Open was last held at Royal Liverpool back in 2006 after a 39 year absence. Tiger Woods won that event but the course has changed a bit in the years since. The course has been lengthened 54 yards to 7,312 and added new swales around some greens that will really test the short games of even the top golfers in the world. The course is also said to be more lush this year and not dried out so it should play much longer then in years past.
Sergio Garcia 25-1
Sergio Garcia is 23rd in the FedexCup rankings and 9th in the official world golf rankings. Sergio Garcia has only played in 10 PGA tour events this season and has played quite well. In those 10 events he hasn’t won but he has 6 top 10 finishes and only finished out of the top 20 twice although those two events were the other two Majors the Masters and US Open. On the European tour Garcia picked up one win at the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters. Garcia has had some success at the British Open in 2005, 2006 and 2007 he finished 5th, 5th, and 2nd. I know that was a long time ago but Garcia seems to be really playing well over the past year or so and maybe this will finally be the year he picks up his 1st Major win.
Graeme McDowell 26-1
Graeme McDowell is 60th in the FedExCup rankings and 17th in the official world golf rankings. McDowell has only played in 13 PGA tour events this season and that explains why he is only in 60th in the FedexCup rankings but he has also played a few events on the European tour which included a win at the Alstom Open de France. On the PGA tour McDowell has 6 top 10 finishes but hasn’t had a top 20 since the Arnold Palmer Invitational back in April. McDowell is 17th in driving accuracy and 1st in putting so if can keep that up this week he should be right there come Sunday.
Miguel Angel Jimenez 95-1
Miguel Angel Jimenez is ranked 28th in the official world golf rankings. Jimenez is 50 years old and if he were to win he would actually become the oldest Major winner. Jimenez winning the British Open might seem like a long shot but the way he’s been playing 95-1 is definitely worth a shot. Jimenez finished 4th in the Masters earlier this year, he won the Spanish Open and he also won his one and only Champion tour event this year so he’s playing as good as anyone right now.
