Overview
The Detroit Tigers head into Cleveland today for a three game series with the Indians. The Tigers haven’t had much luck versus the Indians of late losing 6 of the last 7 meetings overall but they have played the Indians surprisingly well in Cleveland over the past few seasons winning 21 of the last 29 meetings. This has also been a high scoring series with 37 of the last 55 meetings going over the total.
Head to Head Trends
Tigers are 21-8 in the last 29 meetings in Cleveland.
Over is 37-18 in the last 55 meetings.
Cleveland Indians (-127)
The Cleveland Indians are 4th in the American League with a 10-12 record 6 games out of 1st place. The Indians had a pretty good first couple weeks going 9-7 but they have struggled of late losing 5 of the last 6 games.
Starting for the Indians today is Josh Tomlin who is 3-0 with a 3.18 ERA on the season. Tomlin has been solid so far this season but he doesn’t throw a lot of pitches or go deep into games so that puts a lot of pressure on the bullpen but the Indians do have a pretty good bullpen so maybe not a huge deal.
Cleveland Indians Trends
Indians are 3-8 in their last 11 home games following a road trip of 7 or more days.
Indians are 1-7 in Tomlins last 8 home starts vs. a team with a winning record.
Detroit Tigers (+117)
The Detroit Tigers are 2nd in the American League Central with a 14-10 record 3 games back of the 1st place Chicago White Sox. The Tigers are playing some good ball right now winning their last 5 games in a row while outscoring their opponents 35-15.
On the hill for the Tigers in this one is Justin Verlander who is 2-2 with a 5.46 ERA in his 5 starts so far this season. Verlander has actually pitched fairly well this season 4 of his 5 starts have been quality starts he just has the one bad start versus the Pirates who scored 7 runs in just over 4 innings off Verlander.
Detroit Tigers Trends
Tigers are 5-0 in their last 5 overall.
Tigers are 6-2 in Verlanders last 8 road starts.
Conclusion
I like the Detroit Tigers over the Indians in this one. I’m actually kind of surprised the Tigers are as big of underdogs as they are here with Verlander on the mound I would of though it would be closer to a coin toss.
