Overview
The New York Yankees are on the west coast for a three game series with the LA Angels. The Angels haven’t had much luck versus the Yankees over the past couple seasons winning just 3 of the last 14 meetings overall but they have played the Yankees fairly well at home winning 11 of the last 19 meetings.
Head to Head Trends
Yankees are 5-0 in the last 5 meetings.
Yankees are 6-1 in Sabathias last 7 starts vs. Angels.
LA Angels (-131)
The LA Angels are 2nd in the American League West 4 games back of the 1st place Houston Astros. The Angles aren’t really a great team this season but they’re not bad either they are a couple games over .500 at 39-37. The thing that is really hurting the Angels this season is they have no offense batting just .238 as a team and averaging 3.89 runs per game and that’s with Albert Pujols having one of his best seasons in years.
On the hill for the Angels today is lefty C.J. Wilson who is 5-6 with a 3.92 ERA on the season. Wilson has been pretty good this season although I did get hit hard in his last start allowing 7 earned runs to Astros in just 3 innings of work but he did only throw 71 pitches so lets hope his arm is extra fresh today.
LA Angels Trends
Angels are 24-9 in their last 33 home games vs. a left-handed starter.
Angels are 17-5 in Wilsons last 22 home starts.
New York Yankees (+121)
The New York Yankees are 3rd in the American League East just a game back of the Baltimore Orioles and Tampa Bay Rays who are both tied for 1st place. The Yankees have been having good season with the bats averaging 4.78 runs per game but when they’re not in Yankees stadium with that short right field they are averaging just 3.93 runs per game while still allowing well over 4 runs per game.
Starting for the Yankees today is lefty CC Sabathia who is 3-7 with a 5.65 ERA on the season. Sabathia is currently having the worst season of his career and I think I said this early in the season but he should probably just retire.
New York Yankees Trends
Yankees are 5-11 in Sabathias last 16 starts on grass.
Yankees are 4-9 in their last 13 road games vs. a team with a winning record.
Conclusion
I’m going to go with the LA Angles over the Yankees in this one. The Yankees don’t hit all that well away from Yankees Stadium and it really shows their actual lack of power when not having that short right field. Guys like Beltran, McCann, Gardner and Drew who have combined for 39 home runs this season but just 10 of those have come on the road.
