Overview
The Seattle Mariners head into Comerica Park in Detroit for a four game series with the Tigers. This has been a fairly even series of late with each team winning 5 of the last 10 meetings. This has been a high scoring series over the past few seasons with 6 of the last 8 meetings going over the total.
Head to Head Trends
Over is 11-4-1 in the last 16 meetings in Detroit.
Over is 6-2 in the last 8 meetings.
The Detroit Tigers are 3rd in the American League Central 4.5 games back of the 1st place Cleveland Indians. The Tigers were red hot not too long ago winning 8 of 9 games but they have cooled off since although they’re still playing decent ball especially at home where they have won 12 of their last 16 games.
Starting for the Tigers today is Mike Pelfrey who is 1-7 with a 4.79 ERA on the season. Pelfrey hasn’t pitched all that great this season but he also hasn’t been getting much run support from the Tigers offense who are averaging just 3.50 runs per game in his starts.
Detroit Tigers Trends
Tigers are 12-4 in their last 16 home games.
Tigers are 4-9 in Pelfreys last 13 starts.
Seattle Mariners (-120)
The Seattle Mariners are 2nd in the American League West 8.5 games back of the 1st place Texas Rangers. The Mariners were one of the better teams in the league back in late April and May but they haven’t done a whole lot since winning just 8 of their last 23 games.
On the hill for the Mariners today is Nathan Karns who is 5-2 with a 4.06 ERA on the season. Karns like the Mariners team pitched well earlier in the season but he hasn’t done much since and he also hasn’t been going very deep into games throwing 5 or less innings in 5 of his last 6 starts.
Seattle Mariners Trends
Mariners are 2-7 in their last 9 road games.
Mariners are 6-14 in their last 20 Monday games.
Conclusion
I’m going with the Detroit Tigers over the Mariners in this one. I’m not a big fan of Pelfrey but Karns hasn’t been all that great of late either. I think this is a fairly even matchup with the slight edge going to the Tigers with home field advantage so getting them as a small underdog offers some solid value.
