Overview
The Tampa Bay Rays head into Coors field in Colorado for a three game series with the Rockies. Being in opposite leagues the Rays and Rockies don’t play all that often just 15 times since 2002 so head to head trends are almost meaningless here. The Rays have won 7 of the last 12 meetings overall but have won just 4 of the last 12 played in Colorado.
Head to Head Trends
Over is 7-2 in the last 9 meetings.
Rays are 7-5 in the last 12 meetings.
Colorado Rockies (-140)
The Colorado Rockies are 3rd in the National League West 14 games back of the 1st place San Francisco Giants. The Rockies haven’t been super horrible this season but they haven’t all that good either.
The Rockies have one of the best offenses in baseball averaging 5.15 runs per game but that is obviously helped out by playing in Coors Field. Their pitching is near the bottom of the league allowing 5.21 runs per game but again that’s inflated due to playing in the thin Denver air.
On the hill for the Rockies today is lefty Tyler Anderson who is 1-3 with a 3.03 ERA in 6 starts this season. This is Anderson’s first season in the big leagues and so far he’s actually looked pretty impressive it looks like he just can’t get much run support from the Rockies offense.
Colorado Rockies Trends
Rockies are 14-31 in their last 45 interleague home games.
Rockies are 1-4 in Andersons last 5 starts.
Tampa Bay Rays (+120)
The Tampa Bay Rays are last in the American League East 18.5 games out of 1st place. The Rays were playing some decent ball for the first couple months of the season but they have been super bad of late losing 24 of their last 28 games.
When the Rays were playing well they were hitting a lot of homeruns I think they led the Majors at one point this season but once the homeruns dried up it really showed how bad this Rays team actually is. The Rays are averaging just 3.88 runs per game on offense while allowing 4.68 runs per game.
Starting for the Rays in this one is lefty Drew Smyly who is 2-10 with a 5.47 ERA on the season. Smyly had a great start to the season but he’s been knocked around in 7 of his last 8 starts. Smyly’s homerun numbers are also through the roof lately allowing 13 long balls over his last 9 starts.
Tampa Bay Rays Trends
Rays are 4-24 in their last 28 overall.
Rays are 0-4 in Smylys last 4 starts.
Conclusion
I like the Colorado Rockies over the Rays in this one. The Rays have been probably the worst team in all of baseball over the past month or so and I don’t see things going all that well for Smyly tonight either the way he’s been allowing homeruns.
