MLB Pick: Toronto Blue Jays at Minnesota Twins
Overview
The Toronto Blue Jays are in Minnesota this afternoon where they continue their four game series with the Twins. The Blue Jays won the first two game of this series, winning 3-2 in extra innings in game 1 and crushing the Twins 9-3 in the second game.
Head to Head Trends
Blue Jays are 44-16 in the last 60 meetings.
Blue Jays are 21-8 in the last 29 meetings in Minnesota.
Minnesota Twins (+150)
The Minnesota Twins are last in the American League Central with a 10-31 record which is also good for the worst record in all of baseball. The Twins I guess you can say are in a rebuilding phase especially with their pitching staff because they have basically no one that I would consider “good”.
On the hill for the Twins today is rookie Pat Dean who will be making just his third big league appearance and first start. Dean threw 8 innings over his couple relief appearances this season allowing 14 hits and 4 earned runs while striking out 7 so so I don’t see anything overly impressive there.
Minnesota Twins Trends
Twins are 15-37 in their last 52 overall.
Twins are 1-5 in their last 6 games vs. a left-handed starter.
Toronto Blue Jays (-160)
The Toronto Blue Jays are 4th in the American League East with a 21-23 record 6 games back of the 1st place Baltimore Orioles. This has not been the season most people expected from the Blue Jays especially on offense but I think the momentum has finally changed and we’re going to start seeing some big things from this lineup again.
I though that brawl last week might have been the thing to give this team a good kick in the ass and get them going but it looks like it was getting smoked by the Tampa Bay Rays in their last series where they were outscored 31-7.
Starting for the Jays in this one is lefty J.A. Happ who is 5-1 with a 3.40 ERA in 8 starts this season. Happ pitched great in his first 7 starts but he got crushed in his last start versus the Rays giving up 8 earned runs in just 2 inning of work. There’s not much positive you can take out of that but I do like the fact that he only threw 51 pitches so his arm should be nice and fresh today.
Toronto Blue Jays Trends
Blue Jays are 5-2 in their last 7 games vs. a team with a winning % below .400.
Blue Jays are 5-2 in Happs last 7 starts.
Conclusion
I like the Toronto Blue Jays over the Twins again today. I love everything about this game. The Jays look like they might finally get going again on offense plus they’re facing a rookie pitcher on the worst team in the league and I also like Happ to bounce back today versus a Twins team who are hitting just .207 versus lefties on the season.
