MLB Sunday July 9th Cubs at Yankees Betting Preview
Rubber Match in the Bronx
Two of the more iconic franchises in MLB wrap up their weekend series on Sunday in the July 9th Cubs at Yankees betting matchup. Chicago got their first ever victory at Yankee Stadium winning 3-0 on Friday, but a couple of Giancarlo Stanton home runs on Sunday led New York to a 6-3 victory in game two.
New York is a -140 favorite on Sunday following price tags of -156 and -201 so far this weekend. Chicago is a +120 underdog but it’s a hard sell on the Cubbies considering they’ve lost 9 of their last 13 games. Then again, anything can happen on getaway day for the entire Majors as this is the last contest before the All-Star Break. Roughly 60% of the betting public actually likes the Cubs here.
Why the Cubs Have Value Sunday
Chicago was able to get their first win in franchise history at Yankee Stadium on Friday night, so they’ve at least gotten that out of the way this weekend. Cody Bellinger had a HR to lead the way in the series opener, but Chicago managed just 5 hits in game two as they have split the first two games in the Bronx.
The real star of Friday’s win was pitcher Jameson Taillon, who completed 8.0 IP while allowing just 1-hit. Even though the Yankees blasted out 6 runs on Saturday, they were also held to just 1 run on Thursday against Baltimore so two of their last three games have been offensive duds. New York is just 14-16 since losing Aaron Judge.
Kyle Hendricks (3-3, 2.64 ERA) is capable of repeating Taillon’s gem from Friday as he has allowed 2 ER or less in four of his last five outings while the Cubs are 4-1 over that span.
Why the Yankees Have Value Sunday
Stanton had a huge game on Saturday with 3 hits, 2 HRs, and 3 RBI while Josh Donaldson was also able to quiet some of the Bronx boo birds with his 10th HR of the season. That was a big offensive showing for a New York team that had been held to 1 total run the previous two games, so we’ll see if they carry that momentum into the July 9th Cubs at Yankees betting matchup.
Stanton now has 9 RBI in his last nine games so he’s done a solid job of picking up some of the slack in Judge’s absence. Anthony Rizzo has only gone 1-7 over the weekend against his former club, but could be in line for a big day against his longtime teammate Hendricks.
The Yankees obviously have value here with Domingo German (5-5, 4.52 ERA) as we saw what he did on July 28th against the A’s, throwing the 24th perfect game in MLB history. German got tagged for 9 hits on Monday, but he was solid in damage control in holding the Orioles to just 2 ER. The Cubs have also dropped five of their last six against a RH starter.

This side could go either way as the last game before the All-Star Break, but what it really looks like is a pitcher’s duel. German was perfect two starts ago, and Hendricks has a 1.71 ERA in his three road starts this season. Hitters may be looking ahead to a couple days off as well.
