The short Crosstown Classic wraps up Sunday afternoon in the Windy City in the May 29th Cubs at White Sox betting matchup. The North Siders picked up a 5-1 win on Saturday night as +129 underdogs, bouncing back from a brutal 20-5 loss to the Reds two days prior.
The Sox suffered their second straight setback on Saturday night, also losing 16-7 to Boston on Thursday night in a game that resulted in Dallas Keuchel being DFA’d in the middle of a 3-year, $55.5 million deal. The South Siders will have to figure out their pitching moving forward, but hope that they have some stability on Sunday with Dylan Cease on the mound. The Sox are -164 favorites in this spot.
Cubs an Unpredictable Bunch
Good luck figuring which team you’ll get from either side in the May 29th Cubs at White Sox betting matchup. The North Siders can drop two games to the by a combined margin of 24-8 to the 16-30 Reds, and then come back and beat a Sox team trying to make up a 5-game deficit in the AL Central.
The Cubs are a weird team, but one that has potential on offense. Christopher Morel is hitting .314 in his first 10 games as a Major Leaguer, Frank Schwindel and Patrick Wisdom both had 2 RBI on Saturday, while Nico Hoerner had a 3-4 night.
Inconsistency isn’t just found in the Cubs offense, as Marcus Stroman (1-4, 4.88 ERA) can attest to. The right-hander has done a good job of buckling down since giving up 13 ER over his first three starts with the Cubs. Since then Stroman has allowed 2 ER or less in four straight starts, and had his highest pitch count of the year last time out with 97.
Sox Shoot for the Split
This hasn’t been the home stand Tony LaRussa envisioned as the Sox are just 1-3 heading into Sunday’s matchup. Injuries and absences continue to be a concern for Chicago with Luis Robert (COVID list) and Yoan Moncada (questionable) likely out of the lineup, and designating Keuchel for assignment was definitely not part of the Spring Training plan.
Regardless, the Sox come into Sunday’s game as big favorites to get the split against the Cubs. They’ll need a little more from the top of the lineup though as Jose Abreu had the only hit from 1-5 in the order on Saturday night (1-17, 6 K’s). It could be another tough go of it on Sunday, with Sox leadoff man Tim Anderson posting a career .133 average (2-15) vs. Stroman with 7 K’s.
Cease (4-2, 4.24 ERA) is up against the team that drafted him when he faces the Cubs on Sunday. The right-hander has been blasted in his last two home starts, giving up 6ER in 4.0 IP against the Yankees and most recently lasting just 3.0 IP and allowing 7 ER to the Red Sox. That’s pushed his ERA to 5.61 in five starts at Guaranteed Rate Field this season.
Free May 29th Cubs at White Sox Betting Pick
It’s a pretty big -160 price tag on a White Sox team that has lost three of four on their current home stand and with a pitcher who is struggling at home on the mound. Stroman has been solid for the Cubs recently and their offense can surprise you at times.
Free Pick: Cubs +130
