NCAAB January 31st Virginia Tech at #23 Miami Betting Preview
Hokies Winless on the Road This Season
The Hurricanes started the year 13-1, but have slipped a bit going 3-4 over their last seven heading into Tuesday’s Virginia Tech at Miami betting matchup. The Hurricanes have alternated wins and losses the last seven, which does leave them in a good spot with that trend coming off a 71-68 loss at Pittsburgh over the weekend.
The Hokies (13-8) know a thing or two about struggles, losers of seven straight from December 21st to January 21st. VT has bounced back with consecutive wins, but are still +3.5 underdogs on the road in this spot.
Why Virginia Tech Can Cover +3.5 Points
The trends are on the side for the Hokies on Tuesday night, as the underdog is 5-0-1 ATS the last six head to head meetings with the road team going 3-1-1 ATS the last five. These two teams split the series last season with the away club getting the outright win in both contests – both were close as well decided by a combined 4 points.
Virginia Tech finally got back in the conference win column last week, not getting a victory in ACC play since the 80-72 win against North Carolina on December 4th before topping Duke 78-75 last Monday and Syracuse 85-70 on Saturday.
Beating Duke and Syracuse has to give VT some confidence heading into the Virginia Tech at Miami betting matchup. The Hokies are still 0-6 on the road this season, but many of those losses were close including an OT loss at Boston College, losing by 2 points at Wake Forest and 1 point at Clemson.
Why Miami Can Cover -3.5 Points
The ‘Canes have gone just 3-4 since the calendar turned to 2023 but three of those defeats were by 3 points or less and all four were on the road. Miami is 11-0 at home on the year and are playing their first home game in over two weeks on Tuesday night.
Isaiah Wong has big game potential for the Hurricanes with at least 18 points in five of his last 10 including 22+ in four of those. Jordan Miller has also added 18+ in three of his last six. Miami lost by three points at Pittsburgh on Saturday, and even though the Panthers are a solid 8-3 in the conference the Hurricanes were a -1.5 road favorite. The good news to take from that is the Hurricanes have gone 16-5 ATS their last 21 after an ATS loss.
Virginia Tech could have trouble keeping up with the Miami offense on Tuesday night, as the Hurricanes rank 33rd in the country shooting 47.6% from the field and are a top 25 team in free throw shooting. Miami also ranks 12th in the nation in adjusted offensive efficiency.
Free Virginia Tech at Miami Betting Pick
The numbers favor the Hurricanes in this matchup, with Miami being undefeated at home while VT is winless on the road. These two teams usually just battle when they get together though, with four straight games being decided by 4 points or less and two of the last five going into OT. With past clashes like that, taking the points seems to be the way to go.
