NHL Pick: Calgary Flames at Philadelphia Flyers

Overview

The Calgary Flames are in Philadelphia where they take on the Flyers. The Flames and Flyers don’t meet up all that often just a handful of time over the past decade and that’s probably a good thing for the Flames as they have won just 5 of the last 16 meetings overall versus the Flyers but they have won 4 of the last 6 meetings played in Philadelphia so who knows.

Head to Head Trends

Flames are 1-4 in the last 5 meetings.
Under is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings.

Philadelphia Flyers (-150)

The Philadelphia Flyers are 5th in the Metropolitan Division with 65 points 6 points back of the Boston Bruins for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference but the Bruins so have an extra game in hand. The Flyers are making a bit of a playoff push winning 10 of their last 18 games which may not sound all that good but 4 of those losses did come in overtime so they have picked up points in 14 of their last 18 games. The Flyers are a little below average on offense with 2.7 goals per game but it’s defense that they have struggled with for most of the season allowing 2.9 goals although that is much better then what it was earlier in the season.

Philadelphia Flyers Trends

Flyers are 7-3 in their last 10 home games.
Flyers are 4-1 in their last 5 vs. a team with a winning record.

Calgary Flames (+170)

The Calgary Flames are 3rd in the Pacific Division with 70 points which is actually tied for the final playoff spot in the West with the LA Kings and San Jose Sharks. I’ve been saying it for a while the Flames are due for a major slump especially on offense due to their high shooting percentage which is probably too high to maintain for the rest of the season and after scoring just 9 goals over their last 5 games it looks like we might be starting to see that right now. Some other bad news for the Flames is they just lost their captain Mark Giordano for the rest of the season with a torn bicep so it’s not looking good for the Flames making the playoffs this season.

Calgary Flames Trends

Flames are 1-4 in their last 5 overall.
Flames are 18-40 in their last 58 road games vs. a team with a winning home record.

Conclusion

Even though I don’t like the odds I think -150 is a bit high for the Flyers I still have to go with them over Flames in this one. Everything seems to be going against the Flames right now so I can really see them folding and playing horrible the rest of the season.
