Here we go, looking at offering a week four NFL second-half pick or two for the 1 p.m. games. If you’re going to bet on the second half, you have to do it quickly and with confidence. We’ve been monitoring three games and instead of one or two second-half picks, we’re offering three picks on which team will take down the second half. We’ve got:
Carolina Panthers at New England Patriots
Detroit Lions at Minnesota Vikings
Buffalo Bills at Atlanta Falcons
Carolina Panthers at New England Patriots
It was a slow first quarter for both teams with each hitting field goals. The second quarter saw each team nail a TD on passes. The Patriots then went back ahead, 13-10, as Gostkowski hit his second field goal of the game. In the first half, New England had scored first each time and the Panthers have then come back to catch up. But that changed when, in the last few seconds, Carolina scored a TD to go ahead 17-13 and then the Pats hit a field goal to make it 17-16. The Pats snatched an interception in the second quarter, but in the entire half they did not have a sack, QBH, or a TFL. Panther has two sacks, two QBH and four TFL.
Neither team has been a very good second half team, however if the Pats are going to win this one, they will pretty much have to take the second half. We think that they will win this game. The Pats are at -5.5. Take them.
Week Four NFL Second-Half Pick: Pats at -5.5
Detroit Lions at Minnesota Vikings
Thus far, Lions QB Matthew Stafford is outperforming Viking QB Case Keenum. In fact, Detroit’s air and ground attack have been more impressive in the first half than the Viking’s. Also, in their first three games of this season, Minnesota has lost every second half, while Detroit has won every second half. Stafford is a second-half QB who tends to make things happen especially in the fourth quarter. The teams went into the locker room with the Vikings up 7-3. The second half spread is even or has the Lions at +1/2. We like Detroit in the second half.
Week Four NFL Second-Half Pick: Lions at +0.5
Buffalo Bills at Atlanta Falcons
There was no scoring in the initial quarter. In the second quarter, the Falcons got on the board first with a 28-yard field goal. Then the Bills went 77 yards in eight plays and scored the first touchdown. Those points came on a short pass from Taylor to Matthews. In the first half, the Bills outperformed the Falcons in the air, while Atlanta was better on the ground. Overall, the Falcon D was better at creating pressure on the QB and stopping the run. Thus far this season, the Bills have done a bit better in the second half than the Falcons. The Falcons lead 10-7 at the half and are at -3.0 for the second half. We like Atlanta.
