The New England Patriots are on the road at the Washington Commanders in the final preseason game in the National Football League. The New England Patriots are 1-1 so far in preseason play. New England won their opener 17-3 over Carolina, but then fell last week to the Philadelphia Eagles 14-13. The Patriots went 4-13 last season, and had the worst record in the AFC.
For Washington, they are 0-2 in preseason play. The Commanders fell to the Jets on the road and then last week at the Dolphins. Washington is coming into this season following a 4-13 mark last season as well. The Commanders were only ahead of Carolina in the final NFC standings. Washington went 1-7 at home.
The New England Patriots are -4 on the road in this game. The total is set for 33.5.
2024 New England Patriots – New Look
Jacoby Brissett is going to get the first crack behind center for the Patriots. He was just 3 of 7 with an interception in the latest preseason loss. Behind him is rookie Drake Maye out of North Carolina. The Patriots top targets are Kendrick Bourne, DeMario Douglas and Ja’Lynn Polk, all three fairly inexperienced.
New England’s run game will once again start and stop with Rhamondre Stevenson. But, former Washington running back Antonio Gibson coming into the mix should help with some depth. The Patriots were one of the worst offensive teams in the league a season ago, with just 236 points scored.
New England opens their season on September 8th on the road at the Cincinnati Bengals. The home opener for the Patriots comes on September 15th against Seattle.
Commanders Look to Improve
The Commanders, on the other side, were also poor, and they were poor on defense. The Commanders allowed 518 points scored on the season, which was the most in the league, by far. Obviously, that is a point of concern for Washington. They hope second round pick Jer’Zhan Newton out of Illinois can help.
Jayden Daniels will get the nod as the starting quarterback. In his preseason finale, he was 10 for 12, and 78 passing yards. He will play ahead of Marcus Mariota and Jeff Driskel. Brian Robinson Jr. will start as the lead running back, but Austin Ekeler is in town and ready to run. The Commanders will turn to Terry McLaurin, Jahan Dotson and Dyami Brown at the receiving spots.
Washington will start their 2024 season on the road at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In Week two, the Commanders will stay at home and take on divisional rival, the New York Giants.
